How has abortion evolved globally over time?

Liberalization

In the last 30 years, more than 60 countries have liberalized their abortion laws​

Recent changes

In 2020, Argentina and Thailand legalized abortion, and South Korea decriminalized it. Colombia legalized abortion on demand up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and Mexico decriminalized the procedure

 

Trends

The liberalization of abortion laws began in Eastern and Central Europe in the 1950s. The landmark Roe v. Wade decision in the United States was part of this trend

 

Exceptions

A few countries have made their abortion laws more restrictive, including the United States, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Poland
